The White House announced today that U.S. military forces carried out a series of counterterrorism airstrikes in Somalia, targeting a cave complex in the country’s northern region and killing dozens of ISIS operatives. The operation, described as a decisive blow against the terrorist group, marks a continuation of the administration’s aggressive stance on global terrorism.

In a statement posted on X, the White House declared, “Our brave warfighters executed counterterrorism airstrikes, killing dozens of ISIS jihadis hiding in a cave complex in Somalia.” The post was accompanied by a video featuring the text, “To the Terrorists Who Wish to Do Us Harm: We Will Hunt You Down,” alongside three American flags and a grainy satellite image of the targeted cave complex.

The operation follows a similar airstrike ordered by President Trump on February 1, 2025, that targeted a senior ISIS attack planner in the same region. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed at the time that the strikes resulted in the deaths of multiple operatives with no civilian casualties. The White House emphasized that the operation was part of a broader effort to “mop up the mess left by Biden,” referencing what they describe as years of unchecked terrorist activity under the previous administration.

“For years, terrorists killed Americans with impunity. Now, they are the prey—and we are the hunters,” the White House statement continued, signaling a shift in tone and policy. The Biden administration had faced criticism for its handling of counterterrorism operations, notably after a 2021 drone strike in Kabul that mistakenly killed 10 civilians, including seven children, according to a New York Times report. The current administration has pointed to such incidents as evidence of a need for a more assertive approach.
