Associated Press Washington Bureau Chief Julie Pace says President Donald Trump is likely to step up his law and order approach, rather than try to soothe the nation amid a week of protests over the death of George Floyd while in police custody.

"He is not a president who has spent his time in trying to be a uniter," Pace says.

"He actually has has thrived on on division. And so it puts him in a difficult position right now, if you have a nation looking to the Oval Office for some sense that we are all in this together."

Trump told the nation’s governors in a video conference that they they “look like fools” for not deploying even more National Guard troops. “Most of you are weak,” he said.

"Does he think that this will help him, the election," Pace asks.

"It actually, I think, is in line with the president's real personal view points when we've been in these kind of situations before."
