New York Fire department employees lined up their fire engines and sounded their sirens outside hospitals in New York City, to show their support for medical workers battling the new coronavirus.

Sandra Pérez Baos, a scientist working at NYU Langone Health, captured footage outside the facility, where engines stretched down the street.

Other footage had been captured from people's windows outside the Brooklyn Hospital Centre and NYU Langone Health, where they also applauded medical workers on Friday.

Similar demonstrations have happened across the world, as countries deal with the new virus pandemic, which has sickened 1,140,327 and led to 60,887 deaths.

So far the US has had 278,568 cases of the new virus, and 7,163 deaths.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.

The vast majority of people recover.
