During the second of two stops in Ohio Monday, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden made a pitch for bipartisanship, saying he was campaigning "as a proud Democrat, but would govern as an American president."

"I learned a long time ago coming out to Ohio that you win Ohio from Cincinnati north, head north," Biden said.

"Well, you are, you are the starting gate."

As he had done during his earlier stop in Toledo, Biden harshly criticized President Donald Trump for his response to the coronavirus pandemic, and pushed his plans for "testing, tracing and masking."

Trump carried Ohio over Democrat Hillary Clinton by a comfortable 8 percentage points in 2016, but recent polls show this year's presidential race tightening in the state.

The Biden campaign has increased advertising in Ohio lately, even as Trump has scaled back his efforts in the state and elsewhere. Biden's perceived increases in support have largely come as the president has seen his backing slip in cities.

However, Trump is looking to cancel that out by further expanding his already strong support among voters in rural areas.

Biden also offered his condolences to Cincinnati baseball legend Joe Morgan, the Hall of Fame second baseman who became the sparkplug of dominant Cincinnati teams in the mid-1970s and the prototype for baseball’s artificial turf era, who died Sunday at age 77.
