Former US National Security Advisor John Bolton told the people of Hong Kong on Wednesday not to "give up" in the face of the controversial new National Security Law, imposed by China.

The law states that the Hong Kong government will “strengthen public communication, guidance, supervision and regulation over matters concerning national security” for a variety of institutions, including the media and internet.

In a video call with the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Hong Kong on Wednesday Bolton said there was "still broad and deep support" for Hong Kong freedom in the US and the West.

Quoting former UK wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Bolton said he felt this could be Hong Kong's "finest hour."

He also said he felt support for Taiwan maintaining its separate status and deepening ties with the United States "remained very strong."
