Southern California surfers Friday joined in the expressions of protest over the death of George Floyd, the black man who died while in police custody in Minneapolis. Surfers gathered along the beach in Santa Monica, California for a paddle out event. Aerial views from local TV station KTLA showed surfers paddling out to an area just off shore.

They were joining a worldwide show of solidarity to honor those who have died at the hands of police, according to a KTLA report. Paddle outs were held across California and other locations, including in Australia, according to KTLA. The paddle out occurred as crowds continued to turn out at demonstrations throughout California. Across the state, places that lifted curfews this week included Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, Berkeley, Oakland and several San Francisco Bay Area counties.
