The US attorney for the family of George Floyd, who died while in Minneapolis police custody Monday, said people like Floyd have suffered from "the pandemic of racism and discrimination that leads to unjustified killings of black people" long before the coronavirus pandemic.

Attorney Benjamin Crump told The Associated Press that Floyd's family wants the officers involved with Floyd's death to be arrested, saying they have "never, ever been shy about what they want. They want them to be arrested and convicted for murder because they murdered George Floyd, their loved one."

Floyd died in police custody in Minneapolis on Monday and was seen on a bystander's video pleading that he could not breathe as a white officer knelt on his neck and kept his knee there for several minutes after the man stopped moving.

The death was under investigation by the FBI and state law enforcement authorities.

The four officers have been fired, according to the Minneapolis police chief.
