Michigan's governor says the state is not yet at the "apex" of coronavirus cases and she will likely extend the state's stay-at-home order. Governor Gretchen Whitmer gave an update on the coronavirus pandemic after the state's number of cases rose to 15,718 and 617 deaths over the weekend. She also said at a Monday briefing that Detroit-area hospitals are running "dangerously low" on personal protection equipment.

Whitmer further urged people to wear masks when they venture outside. She also reported an "incredible surge" in the number of unemployment claims and promised that people would get paid, despite computer woes and bureaucratic red tape.

The state's chief medical executive says Michigan's virus testing capacity has grown significantly since late March.A field hospital at Detroit's downtown convention center could get its first COVID-19 patients this week.

The federal government is creating a 1,000-bed hospital at TCF Center, formerly known as Cobo Center.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and could lead to death.
