Sailors and civilian crew members are hoisting new hospital beds on board the USNS Mercy, a hospital ship anchored at the Port of Los Angeles.

The ship is taking on patients referred by on-shore hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ship arrived in Los Angeles in March from San Diego.

The new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms for most people, but for some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness or death.
