The governor of the US state of Illinois, J.B. Pritzker, has activated 250 additional Illinois National Guard soldiers to help local law enforcement in light of violent protests against the killing of George Floyd.

Pritzker also signed a disaster proclamation for nine counties, including the Chicago area and central Illinois, to facilitate state resources.

The governor said that thefts and damage seen to businesses should not diminish the "pain and anguish" that many who started the protests feel.

US President Donald Trump threatened on Monday to deploy the United States military unless states quickly halted the violent protests that have convulsed cities from coast to coast.
