Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced Wednesday that the city will be partnering with private researchers and universities to research the development of antibody tests for the novel coronavirus.

Garcetti said these tests will be critical for reopening the city and lifting the stay at home orders currently in place.

"We know that blood testing is critical in looking at immunity, helping identify Americans who might be able to serve in workplaces or classrooms and roles that may otherwise create significant risk of transmission," Garcetti said. "The existing tests are still not good enough and not widespread enough."

The new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms for most people. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness or death.
