Microsoft to regulate California's digital privacy law nationwide; the law also called AB 375 is similar to EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

Digital giant Microsoft plans to follow California's digital privacy law throughout the US said the Company in a statement on November 11. The law once followed will give consumers more control over how companies collect and manage their personal data. The law passed into effect in California on June 28th of 2018 has been strongly supported by Microsoft which the company mentioned in its blog. The law will be put it into full effect by January 1, 2020. California's law is meant to provide protection to residents in the absence of federal law and to push the nation to offer more consumer protections. As data privacy scandals brought the anger of lawmakers and regulators down on Silicon Valley, Microsoft was pushed to consider the privacy act.

Julie Brill, Microsoft's chief privacy officer, wrote in the post that CCPA marks an important step toward providing people with more robust control over their data in the United States. It also shows that we can make progress to strengthen privacy protections in this country at the state level even when Congress can't or won't act, she added.

About California's Consumer Privacy Act

The Act is the strongest privacy legislation enacted in any state in the US at the moment. it allows people to request that data be deleted and gives them the opportunity to opt-out of having their information sold to a third party. Also known as “AB 375,” the law has been described by some as “almost GDPR in the US”. General Data Protection Regulation or GDPR was rolled out last year by the European Union. As per the law, if a business (as defined by the bill) collects any type of personal information, this should be disclosed in a clear privacy policy available on the website of the business. Should a consumer desire to know what data is being collected, the company is required to provide such information.
