1. SOUNDBITE (English) Mayor Bill de Blasio, (D) New York:
"I really fear a step in the wrong direction. I mean, we are here fighting gun violence. We need to turn the corner in 2021 by working with communities to really turn things around, and what do we have in the middle of that? The Supreme Court is going to consider making it easier for people to walk around with a gun? I mean, that's just backwards and dangerous. So, I heard that news and my heart sank. I mean, we have come so far to try and keep guns out of the hands of New Yorkers, particularly young people and the Supreme Court – it looks like they're working overtime to put guns right back in those hands. That that really, really worries me."

De Blasio made the comments to reporters on Monday during his daily briefing.

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a New York case over the right to carry a firearm in public for self-defense.
The case will be argued in the fall and marks the court's first foray into gun rights since Justice Amy Coney Barrett came on board in October, making a 6-3 conservative majority.

The justices said Monday that they'll review a lower-court ruling that upheld New York's restrictive gun permit law.
New York is among eight states that limit who has the right to carry a weapon in public.
