Punjab resident shot dead in USA's gas station, no arrest so far

The incident occurred at the Phillips 66/Arby’s off of Lincolnway West and the victim has been identified as Baljeet Singh, resident of Chatt village in Punjab.

An Indian was shot dead in the USA on Wednesday night while he was closing the department store where he used to work. The incident occurred at the Phillips 66/Arby’s off of Lincolnway West and the victim has been identified as Baljeet Singh, a resident of Chatt village in Punjab. Baljeet, 24, worked at a department store on a gas station which was owned by Avtar Singh, another resident of Chatt village. The South Bend Police arrived at the scene and found Singh in the parking lot of the store who suffered a gunshot wound.

Suspect on Surveillance camera

Singh was rushed to the hospital and taken immediately into surgery but later he passed away. The Saint Joseph County Homicide Unit is currently looking for the one suspect who was captured on the surveillance camera. The footage showed that Singh aka Prince was closing the store for the evening when the gunman walked to him pointing a gun. Singh gave the suspect everything which was there in the register in an apparent case of robbery. After that, the gunman made his way around the counter to shoot Singh.

No arrests so far

The homicide detectives are still investigating the case and no arrests have been made so far. “As far as we know, we only have one suspect, he wasn’t working with anybody,” said South Bend Police Sergeant Douglas Masterson to a local news channel. "But right now we only have one suspect that came into the store and shot the clerk," he added. Manager of the store, Sam Singh, also a cousin of Prince, said that he had moved to the US from India just over a year ago looking for a better life.

Growing cases of gun violence in the US

With growing cases of gun violence in the United States, lawmakers are still awaiting proposals from the White House on gun control. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said that Congress remains “in a holding pattern” on gun control. On the other hand, President Trump had said that he would veto a House-passed bill to expand background checks for gun purchases. “I still await guidance from the White House as to what (Trump) thinks he’s comfortable signing,” McConnell told reporters.
