Demonstrators shot fireworks at the U.S. federal courthouse in Portland, Oregon as protests there stretched into Wednesday morning.

Federal agents emerged from the building and used what appeared to be tear gas to disperse the protesters.

Protests have been held nightly in Portland since George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis in May.

The protesters are calling for an end to what they describe as police brutality and want federal agents to leave Portland.

U.S. President Donald Trump sent the agents to stop the protests, but local and state officials say the agents have made things worse.

A senior White House official says the Trump administration has started talks with the Oregon governor’s office and indicated that it could begin to draw down the presence of federal agents in Portland if the state steps up its own enforcement.
