President Donald Trump on Tuesday praised "great warriors" from the US marines for their handling of the crisis at the US embassy compound in the Iraqi capital earlier in the day.

Angered by deadly airstrikes targeting an Iran-backed militia, dozens of Iraqi Shiite militiamen and their supporters broke into the compound in Baghdad.

US guards fired teargas as the protesters smashed a main door and set fire to a reception area in one of the worst attacks on the embassy in recent memory.

Speaking as arrived for a New Year's Eve reception at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, the president was adamant that the incident would "never, ever be a Benghazi", referring to the 2012 attacks in Libya that left the US ambassador and three other Americans dead.

Trump also commented on North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's accusation that his administration was dragging its feet in nuclear negotiations.

North Korea's state media said Kim warned that his country would soon show a new strategic weapon to the world as it bolstered its nuclear deterrent in the face of “gangster-like” US pressure.
