President Donald Trump said Wednesday that fear about a global coronavirus pandemic is not the only factor causing the stock market to tumble this week.

Speaking to reporters in the White House briefing room, Trump blamed the Democrats running to unseat him in November as the second cause of the market drop.

"I think the financial markets are very upset when they look at the Democrat candidates standing on that stage, making fools out of themselves," Trump said.

Stocks fell for three straight days this week amid worries about economic fallout from the virus outbreak that originated in China, erasing all of this year's market gains.

Trump predicted that after he wins a second term in November, the stock market "is going to boom like it's never boomed before, just like it did, by the way, after I won the last election. The stock market the day after went up like a rocket ship."
