U.S. President Donald Trump, accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump, left the White House on Friday as the Senate held a crucial vote in his impeachment trial.

They were scheduled to spend the weekend at the Trump Mar-a-largo resort in Florida.

The Senate voted 51 to 49 to reject summoning of witnesses, which all but ensures Trump's eventual acquittal as the extraordinary proceedings begin to come to a close.

Still, senators appeared ready to push off a final vote on acquittal until next week.

Timing was fluid, with the trial conflicting with Monday's Democratic Iowa Caucuses and Tuesday's State of the Union Address.
