Trump lawyer, Dems spar over impeachment precedent

Democrats argue that the purpose of impeaching an ex-president, who can no longer be removed from office because he has left it, is to hold him accountable for the insurrection and to seek to bar him from holding future office.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio submitted a question to former President Donald Trump's legal team as well as House Democrats about what kind of "precedent" a conviction would set in the impeachment trial of the former president. Trump's legal team and some Republican lawmakers have argued it's not constitutional to hold an impeachment trial for a former president, but that view is far from unanimous. Democrats argue that the purpose of impeaching an ex-president, who can no longer be removed from office because he has left it, is to hold him accountable for the insurrection and to seek to bar him from holding future office.
