Sotheby's on Wednesday auctioned artworks including a Banksy painting for which it said it will accept bitcoin as payment.

It represents the first time a major auction house is accepting cryptocurrency as payment for a physical piece of art, according to the famed auction house.

The winning bidder can also pay in U.S. dollars.

The sales were conducted from Sotheby's reimagined saleroom, redesigned by David Korins, famed creative director whose set designs include the Broadway hits Hamilton and Beetlejuice: The Musical, among others.

The sales also mark the return of in-person bidding in the New York saleroom.

Sotheby's welcomed a limited number of collectors to bid live from the saleroom for the first time in more than a year.
