Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik’s nomination for U.S. ambassador to the United Nations is facing uncertainty as pressure builds within her party for her to withdraw, according to sources cited in a CBS News report.

Discussions are reportedly underway about whether Stefanik should step away from consideration. She has not resigned from her congressional seat, and with the House GOP holding a razor-thin majority, every vote counts. House Speaker Mike Johnson has been made aware of the ongoing talks regarding her future.

Republicans weigh timing and political implications

Stefanik, a key ally of President Donald Trump, was nominated for the U.N. role after the 2024 election. Her nomination had advanced through the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on January 30, and there were few doubts she had enough support to be confirmed. However, with Republicans holding a slim 218-213 majority in the House and four vacant seats, losing her vote could be costly.

GOP leaders are reportedly considering delaying further action on her nomination until after the special elections in Florida on April 1, where two vacant Republican seats are expected to remain under GOP control.

White House and Stefanik remain silent

Neither the White House nor Stefanik have publicly commented on the matter. The uncertainty surrounding her nomination raises questions about the balance of power in the House and the broader political strategy of the GOP.

Stefanik, who was first elected to Congress in 2014, has steadily risen in the party ranks and is the highest-ranking Republican woman in the House. She attended a Cabinet meeting at the White House late last month, underscoring her close ties to the administration.

For now, her future remains uncertain as Republicans weigh whether to keep her in Congress or move forward with her nomination to the U.N.
