Evacuees from Afghanistan arrived in the United States on Sunday, landing in northern Virginia before being taken to a temporary housing center in Chantilly.

The plane carrying the families had landed at nearby Dulles International Airport.

U.S. President Joe Biden says the U.S.-led evacuation of Americans, at-risk Afghans and others from Kabul's airport had picked up speed over the weekend.

Speaking at the White House on Sunday, Biden said 11,000 evacuees had been airlifted out of the Afghan capital in a 36-hour period.

He also said no evacuees were being flown directly to the United States without prior screening.
