US Vice President Kamala Harris swears in the new Ambassador to Brazil as the South American country is reeling from violent riots against its seats of power. Protestors swarmed into Congress, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace Sunday. Many have said they want the Brazilian army to restore the far-right ex-President Jair Bolsonaro to power and oust the newly inaugurated leftist Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Harris says the administration is "very much looking forward" to Ambassador Elizabeth Bagley's leadership in Brazil and working with newly elected President Lula da Silva. "This was an obvious and clear attack on a democratic process, and we condemn it, of course," said Harris. "I'm very confident in her (Bagley) ability to represent the United States and to extend to President Lula all that we mean in terms of the work that we will do together as allies on some of the most important issues facing our world."
