New Delhi: The controversial leak of war plans has put US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz in a dangerous position, with his career hanging in the balance. The decision now rests with President Donald Trump, who will ultimately decide Waltz's future in the coming days.
A White House staffer called Waltz "a f*****g idiot," and another official claimed his career "should not survive" after sensitive war plans for military strikes in Yemen were mistakenly shared with Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, through a secure messaging app.
The text chain contained detailed operational information about upcoming strikes targeting Iran-backed Houthi rebels, including specifics on targets, weapons, and attack sequencing.
Goldberg reported that he received the Signal invitation from Waltz. The group already had several key officials, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Tulsi Gabbard, Trump’s director of national intelligence.
The National Security Council has launched an investigation into how Goldberg’s number ended up in the group chat.
White House officials are furious, with some calling the leak “reckless” and suggesting Waltz should resign to protect the administration’s credibility. One senior White House official told Politico, “Half of them saying he’s never going to survive or shouldn’t survive.”
Another official added, “Waltz should resign to prevent the president from being put in a bad position.”
President Trump has not yet made a final decision, and the fate of his National Security Advisor hangs in the balance.
According to sources, Waltz and Trump had a conversation regarding the incident, and for now, the president is standing by his NSA.
“As President Trump said, the attacks on the Houthis have been highly successful and effective. President Trump continues to have the utmost confidence in his national security team, including national security adviser Mike Waltz,” said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
However, the leak has raised serious concerns about the level of care taken when sharing sensitive military information. One official told Politico, “It was reckless not to check who was on the thread. It was reckless to be having that conversation on Signal. You can’t have recklessness as the national security adviser.”
