New Delhi: Palestinians in Gaza are increasingly taking to the streets to express their frustration with Hamas, the group that has ruled the territory since 2007. The recent surge in protests, which have seen hundreds of Gaza’s marching for the first time since the war with Israel began, is a powerful cry for change. But what is motivating these protesters? Why is the movement different from those of the past?

‘Hamas are Terrorists’

Many of the protestors view Hamas as a terrorist group that has brought nothing but violence and destruction to Gaza. The war with Israel, triggered by a deadly Hamas attack in October 2023, has led to the deaths of tens of thousands of Palestinians and widespread suffering. With their homes destroyed, families lost, and no end in sight to the conflict, many Gazans are now demanding that Hamas step down.

‘We Want Peace’

The protests echo a deep desire among Gazans for peace, something that has long been out of reach. As the war rages on, the violence only continues to escalate, and civilians are paying the price. The call for peace is a direct challenge to Hamas’s militant agenda.

‘We Want to Live a Normal Life’

The daily struggles of life in Gaza, from the lack of basic necessities like food, clean water and medical supplies to the constant threat of violence, have driven many to demand a return to normalcy.

Why This Time is Different

While protests against Hamas have happened before, they have often been suppressed quickly. The current movement, however, is gaining momentum for several reasons:

The group's grip on Gaza is weakening. After years of war and suffering, the people of Gaza are starting to lose their fear of Hamas's repressive tactics. The group is facing growing internal opposition, and its regional backers are less supportive than before.

Qatar-sponsored media, which has long been a strong ally of Hamas, is losing its credibility. The world is now able to hear more authentic voices from Gaza, showing the true scale of opposition to Hamas.

Palestinians in Gaza have reached a breaking point. After suffering unimaginable losses, many feel they have nothing left to lose and are willing to take a stand against Hamas.

A Voice for the Voiceless

Mohammed Diab, a protester from Beit Lahia, lost his home and his brother in an Israeli airstrike. He spoke for many when he said, “We refuse to die for anyone, for any party's agenda or the interests of foreign states. Hamas must step down and listen to the voice of the grieving.”
