Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday made an explosive announcement that he will quit politics after his present term ends in 2027.
“I wasn't involved in politics before becoming president and I won't be involved afterwards."
He made the announcement during a two-day visit to Cyprus for a European Council meeting, speaking to students at the French-Cypriot school in Nicosia.
In 2017, Macron had become the youngest President of France at the age of 39. He was re-elected to the post after elections in 2022. His present term ends in 2027, and according to the French Constitution, a leader cannot be elected as the President for the third consecutive term.
The comments stand in marked contrast to what Macron said in July 2025 at a Paris rally of his party's youth section celebrating its 10th anniversary, when he told the crowd he would need them “in two years, in five years, in 10 years”. His comment was widely interpreted as a signal he was preparing for the 2032 presidential election.
