Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump , calling it “positive, very substantive, and frank.” The discussion revolved around the ongoing war, with Trump briefing Zelenskyy on his conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin and the steps needed to achieve peace. Following the call, Ukraine accepted an unconditional ceasefire proposed by the US.

In a long post Zelenskyy shares the details of the meeting and ‘thanked’ President Donald Trump twice for the peace deal.

Ukraine Accepts Ceasefire Proposal

During the call, Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of working with the US to bring an end to the war. “We agreed that Ukraine and the United States should continue working together to achieve a real end to the war and lasting peace,” he said. He also stressed that American leadership could ensure peace within the year.

“The American side also proposed an unconditional ceasefire on the frontline, and Ukraine accepted this proposal as well. We will continue working to make this happen. We believe that such steps are necessary to create the possibility for a comprehensive peace agreement to be prepared during the ceasefire,” he added.

Trump Briefs Zelenskyy on Putin Talks

The phone call also included a briefing from Trump on his discussion with Putin. Zelenskyy said the two leaders “reviewed the situation in Kursk” and agreed to closely coordinate intelligence sharing between their defense teams.

“We spoke about the situation in the Kursk region, touched on the issue of the release of POWs, and the return of Ukrainian children who were taken by Russian forces,” he added. The discussion also covered the need for strengthening Ukraine’s air defense systems, particularly through additional Patriot missile batteries. Trump reportedly assured Zelenskyy that he would work to find available systems, particularly in Europe.

‘Partial Ceasefire Against Energy’

Another key takeaway from the call was an agreement on a partial ceasefire related to energy infrastructure. Both sides have instructed their teams to work on the technical aspects of implementing and expanding the ceasefire.

“We instructed our teams to resolve technical issues related to implementing and expanding the partial ceasefire. Ukrainian and American teams are ready to meet in Saudi Arabia in the coming days to continue coordinating steps toward peace,” Zelenskyy said. He also acknowledged the contributions of key advisors and representatives involved in the discussions.

A Public ‘Thank You’ to Trump

The conversation took on a political dimension after Zelenskyy, who recently faced criticism from Republican senator JD Vance for not thanking Trump, made sure to publicly acknowledge his efforts.

“I thanked President Trump and the American people for their support,” he stated. “I thanked him for a good and productive start to the work of the Ukrainian and American teams in Jeddah on March 11—this meeting of the teams significantly helped in moving toward ending the war.”
