Sulur, Tamil Nadu: The Indian Air Force (IAF) has initiated a landmark multilateral exercise, Ex ‘Tarang Shakti,’ marking a significant milestone in international air operations and defence collaboration. The Vice Chief of Air Staff (VCAS), Air Marshal A. P. Singh, has hailed the exercise as a “landmark event” in Indian military history, emphasizing its role in strengthening global military partnerships.

Exercise ‘Tarang Shakti’ is touted as the most significant and exclusive international air exercise ever conducted within the Indian realm. With invitations extended to 51 countries, 30 have confirmed their participation, underscoring India’s growing international friendships and defence partnerships. The exercise will feature a diverse array of aircraft and tactical manoeuvres, including French Rafales, German Typhoons, Australian F-18s, and Greek F-16s, illustrating its global scale.

Phases and Participants

The exercise will unfold in two distinct phases:

Phase 1: Scheduled from August 6th to August 14th at Air Force Station Sulur, this phase will see participation from the French, German, Spanish, and United Kingdom Air Forces, showcasing their assets and operational capabilities.

Phase 2: Set to take place from August 29th to September 14th at Air Force Station Jodhpur, this phase will involve Australia, Bangladesh, Greece, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States, along with observer nations including Italy, Malaysia, the Philippines, and several others.

Objective and Scope

The primary goal of Exercise Tarang Shakti is to enhance India’s bilateral defence ties and demonstrate its Indigenous defence capabilities. The exercise aims to present India as a credible defence force and a key player in the pursuit of ‘Atmanirbharta’ (self-reliance) in defence. It will feature a range of Indian-made equipment, from the LCA Tejas and LCH Prachanda to advanced air defence systems and air-to-air missiles.

Senior leaders from participating air forces will be hosted as Distinguished Visitors (DVs) during both phases of the exercise. The DV days will include static displays, expositions, and aerial demonstrations, providing opportunities for inter-contingent relations and networking among international military leaders.

Significance and Strategic Impact

Exercise Tarang Shakti is strategically significant as it enhances interoperability and fosters international collaboration. The exercise will involve real-time simulation and integration of sensor data to improve situational awareness and operational capabilities. It aims to offer a challenging training environment, enhancing understanding and cooperation among the participating nations.

The exercise follows a historical precedent set by the global air defence exercise ‘Shiksha’ held in November 1963, which brought together India, the US, the UK, and Australia. With Ex ‘Tarang Shakti,’ India aims to build on this legacy, furthering its strategic partnerships and showcasing its growing defence capabilities.

Exercise Tarang Shakti represents a significant step towards bolstering global military cooperation and enhancing the Indian Air Force's operational effectiveness. As Exercise Tarang Shakti progresses, it will undoubtedly reinforce India's position as a key player in global defence affairs, while promoting peace and stability through enhanced military partnerships.
