ABB, a global technology leader in electrification and automation, has joined forces with Titagarh Rail Systems in a strategic partnership aimed at supplying propulsion systems for metro rolling stock projects in India, according to a joint statement by ABB and Titagarh Rail Systems. The collaboration, in line with the Indian government's "Make in India" and "Atmanirbhar Bharat" (self-reliant India) initiatives, has already secured orders for designing and supplying equipment for metro coaches in Gujarat.

Titagarh Rail Systems specialises in the design, manufacture, supply, commissioning, and servicing of passenger rolling stock and metro coaches for both Indian and international markets. ABB, a leader in the design, manufacture, and servicing of propulsion systems and electrical equipment for railways and metro systems, brings its global expertise to the partnership. The alliance aims to capitalise on their potential and synergy, establishing a strong presence in the Indian market and expanding to other projects and countries.

Under the agreement, Titagarh will purchase ABB propulsion systems, including traction converters, auxiliary converters, traction motors, and TCMS software. The partnership also involves securing manufacturing rights and production licenses for traction motors, along with the complete transfer of technology for the GoA 4 (Driverless metro) TCMS software from ABB to Titagarh.

Edgar Keller, President of Traction Business at ABB, emphasised that this strategic partnership provides a robust foundation for ABB to enter and expand its footprint in the Indian market. The collaboration supports efforts to make rail transportation in India more sustainable through energy-efficient technology produced entirely in India.

Umesh Chowdhary, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Titagarh, highlighted the partnership's significance in enabling Titagarh to fully participate in India's Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives. The collaboration involves setting up manufacturing facilities for propulsion chain components and developing in-house capabilities for TCMS, aligning with the government's vision of self-reliance.

The strategic partnership is already in motion, with orders for propulsion equipment and TCMS for metro coaches in Gujarat, a prominent industrialised state in India.

ABB, listed on SIX Swiss Exchange (ABBN), is committed to driving innovations that accelerate industrial transformation, with a focus on electrification and automation.

Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL) is a key player in both Passenger and Freight Rail Systems, offering mobility solutions through railway wagons, components, passenger coaches, and metro coaches. TRSL holds a prominent position as the largest private sector manufacturer of railway wagons and has secured significant orders from Indian Railways.

The collaboration between ABB and Titagarh aligns with the vision of a self-reliant and sustainable future for rail transportation in India, emphasising technological innovation and localised manufacturing capabilities.

Titagarh shares ended 3.53 per cent lower at Rs 940.20 apiece on the NSE on Monday, November 20.
