Noida: A private school in Noida's Sector 132 has sparked controversy after issuing a circular requesting parents not to pack non-vegetarian food in their children's tiffin boxes. The request, aimed at ensuring health safety and promoting inclusivity, has divided opinions among parents, with some accusing the school of overstepping its boundaries and infringing on personal dietary choices.

The circular from Delhi Public School (DPS) Noida emphasized that non-vegetarian food items can spoil quickly in the hot and humid weather, potentially posing health risks to students. It also highlighted the school’s commitment to inclusivity, stating that maintaining a vegetarian environment in the cafeteria helps ensure that all students feel respected, regardless of their dietary preferences or restrictions.

Supriti Chauhan, Principal of DPS Noida, clarified that the circular was a request, not a mandate. "We have written to the parents requesting that students refrain from bringing non-vegetarian food items to school. This is not a diktat, but only a request. We issue such a circular every year and this year’s is nothing new. There is no ban, no directive, no advisory… only a respectful request," Chauhan said in a statement to a newspaper.

The circular outlined two key reasons for the request:

1. Health and Safety: Non-vegetarian food, when cooked in the morning for lunchtime consumption, can pose serious health risks if not stored and handled properly, according to the school.
2. Inclusivity and Respect: By maintaining a vegetarian environment, the school aims to ensure that all students feel comfortable and respected while eating their meals together.

Despite the school’s reasoning, the request has ignited a debate among parents. Some parents took to social media to express their frustration, arguing that the school was imposing unnecessary restrictions on students' dietary choices. One parent wrote, "This feels like an invasion of our child’s dietary preferences."

However, others supported the school’s decision. One user posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Good move by DPS Noida. In our times, there were similar rules. It may look discriminatory to some, but it respects the majority who do not consume non-veg. Respect others' feelings, not just yours.”
