Mumbai Civic Body Elections To Be Held On January 15, Result To Be Announced Next Day
The Maharashtra State Election Commissioner on Monday announced that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections will be held for 29 municipal corporations on January 15. The filing of nominations will begin on December 23 and continue till December 30.
Mumbai: The Mumbai civic body or the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will go to the polls on January 15, with counting of votes scheduled for the next day, January 16.
Maharashtra State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare on Monday announced the election schedule for the civic body polls across the state, with elections to be held for 29 municipal corporations. The announcement was made during a press conference held in Mumbai.
As many as 2,869 seats in these municipal corporations will be up for grabs, said the State Election Commission (SEC).
As per the schedule, the filing of nominations will commence on December 23 and continue till December 30, 2025. The scrutiny of nomination papers will be conducted on December 31, while the last date for withdrawal of candidature has been fixed as January 2, 2026.
The final list of contesting candidates, along with the allotment of election symbols, will be published on January 3, 2026.
Polling & Counting Dates
Polling for all the notified municipal corporations will be held on January 15, 2026, while the counting of votes will take place on January 16, 2026, the State Election Commission said.
The Commission also announced that Jaha and Ichchalkarnji, which have been newly formed as municipal councils, will go to the polls along with the other civic bodies.
Offline Nominations, EVM-Based Voting
Election officials said that nomination forms will be filled offline, following established procedures. The polls will be conducted using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) across all municipal corporations.
For the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) alone, the Commission has issued an order for setting up 10,000 polling stations, underlining the scale of the civic exercise in the state capital.
Launch of ‘Matadhikar’ Mobile Application
In a bid to enhance voter participation and awareness, the State Election Commission announced the launch of a mobile application named “Matadhikar”.
According to the Commission, the app allows users to register by entering their name, linking their social media accounts and providing location details. The app is aimed at improving voter engagement and access to election-related information.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation polls are expected to witness a direct contest between two major alliances in the state, the ruling Mahayuti and the Opposition's Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). The Mahayuti, which governs the state, comprises the BJP, the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde, and the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
The main opposition alliance includes the Congress, the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) and the Shard Pawar-led faction of NCP-SP.
