Anirudh Ravichander was just 19 years old when he composed Why This Kolaveri Di back in 2011. He rose to fame from the song and has now become one of the most popular music composers in India. During an interview with Film Companion, Anirudh recalled that the time was a "total blur" for him and revealed that the song was not supposed to be released online on YouTube. The song was a part of the music album of the film starring Dhanush and Shruti Haasan. The song went viral on the internet when the concept of viral was not even that common.

During the interview, Anirudh Ravichander shared that the music company had originally planned on releasing the song on a CD, but a rough version was allegedly leaked online due to which the makers decided to put out the song online. He said, "We didn’t have time to make CDs," he added, and said that it was planned that "for now, let’s just release it online on YouTube."

Anirudh recalled how upset he was at the time and said, "I was quite sad then, because as a composer, you want your first movie, first song to come out on a CD. You want to give it to your friends. I was 19 or something and I was like 'Oh god, this is my first song and already the bad version had leaked and now this song is coming out on something called YouTube.'"

In a conversation with Film Companion, Anirudh spoke about one of the most meaningful gifts he ever received. The artist was talking about a vintage black piano that he received from Thalapathy Vijay. The composer said that Vijay chose to surprise him with the present after their 2014 film titled Kaththi's music became a huge chartbuster in the Tamil cinema industry.
