Golden Globes: Cillian Murphy bags Best Actor award for Oppenheimer, Emma Stone wins Best Actress

The 81st Golden Globe Awards are currently underway in the Beverly Hills, California. The Christopher Nolan directorial Oppenheimer is leading the pack at the Golden Globe Awards as its lead actor Cillian Murphy won the trophy for Best Actor. On the other hand, Emma Stone was honoured with the title of Best Actress – musical or comedy at the ongoing Golden Globe Awards.

Cillian Murphy won for his portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist credited with being the "father of the atomic bomb" for his role in the Manhattan Project—the World War II undertaking that developed the first nuclear weapons. Cillian Murphy edged out Bradley Cooper for ‘Maestro’, Leonardo DiCaprio for ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, Colman Domingo for ‘Rustin’, Andrew Scott for ‘All of Us Strangers’ and Barry Keoghan for ‘Saltburn’.

The official X handle congratulated the actor and wrote: “Congratulations to Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer on your WIN for Best Male Actor – Motion Picture – Drama! #GoldenGlobes.”

She was feted for her work in the science fantasy black comedy film ‘Poor Things’. Other nominees included Fantasia Barrino for ‘The Color Purple’, Jennifer Lawrence for ‘No Hard Feelings’, Natalie Portman for ‘May December’, Alma Poysti for ‘Fallen Leaves’ and Margot Robbie for ‘Barbie’. ‘Poor Things’ tells the story of Bella Baxter, a young Victorian woman who, after being crudely resurrected by a scientist following her suicide, runs off with a debauched lawyer to embark on an odyssey of self-discovery and sexual liberation.

He said, “I knew the first time I walked on a Christopher Nolan set that it was different,” Murphy said during his acceptance speech. “I could tell by the level of rigor, the level of focus, the level of dedication, the complete lack of any seating options for actors [Laughter] that I was in the hands of the visionary director and master.”

Murphy continued, “I want to thank Chris and Emma [Thomas] for having the faith in me for 20 years. Thanks so much. One of the most beautiful and vulnerable things about being an actor is that you can’t do it on your own, really. We had the most incredible ensemble cast in this movie. It was magic and some of them are here today. Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Gary Oldman. Thank you for carrying me and holding me through this movie.”
