Actor-producer Sohum Shah's Tumbbad made a stellar return to theatres on Friday The 13th. It earned a nett box office collection of ₹1.65 crore on the first day of its re-release, nearly three times its original opening six years ago. While the buzz surrounding the film gathers pace, it seems like the movie, which was earlier streaming online on Prime Video, has been taken down from the streaming service. It seems like it was before its re-release to warrant a run to the cinema halls for those who want to watch it.
Tumbbad 'not available' on OTT
Tumbbad is currently not available on Prime Video and Netflix in India. These two platforms hosted the film earlier, but a search now reveals that they are no longer available for streaming. if you missed out on the movie during its initial release in 2018 and want to watch it now, you will have to head to cinema halls while it runs on the big screens.
Directed by Rahi Anil Barve and produced by the actor under his banner Sohum Shah Films, the atmospheric horror drama received critical acclaim when it released in theatres on October 12, 2018. At the time, the film had earned Rs 65 lakh on the opening day and eventually ended its theatrical run with a net collection of over ₹12 crore.
Tumbbad: Historic ticket sales and sequel announced
Re-released on September 13, Tumbbad surpassed the re-release box office numbers of classic films such as Sholay, Mughal-e-Azam and Rockstar. "Many re-released films have done well like Rockstar, Laila Majnu, Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein, but this one is on another level in terms of business," Kamal Gianchandani, CEO of PVR INOX Pictures Limited told PTI. It sold over 20,000 tickets in advance booking.
On Saturday, Sohum Shah announced a sequel to Tumbbad, a long-standing demand from the film's loyal fanbase. A teaser of the sequel is also attached to the re-release cut of the film. The actor-producer assured fans that the sequel will dig deeper into the theme of greed. “With ‘Tumbbad 2’, we want to push the cinematic experience and boundaries even further. Tumbbad 2 will take audiences deeper into the world we’ve created, with bigger twists and a more intense exploration of what happens when greed knows no limits,” Sohum said.
