Vandana Shah, the lawyer representing Saira Banu in the divorce case, spoke exclusively to Republic about the update on the ongoing situation, whether there is any settlement or dispute between the couple's divorce. 

When asked if Saira Banu had sought any compensation or legal settlement, Vandana clarified that the dispute had not reached that point. She confirmed, “Not as yet. It has not come to this stage yet. It would be an amicable divorce.”

Saira's lawyers issued a joint statement on Tuesday confirming their split. The statement cited "pain, agony, tension and emotional strain" as the reason behind the end of their nearly three-decade-long marriage. The news of their separation comes as a shock to many. "After many years of marriage, Mrs Saira and AR Rahman have made the difficult decision to separate. This decision comes after significant emotional strain in their relationship," a portion of the statement confirming Rahman and Saira's divorce read. It also cited that "tensions and difficulties" in their relationship created an "insurmountable gap" between them, "one that neither party feels able to bridge at this time". The statement also emphasised that the couple has taken this decision out of "pain and agony".

“Mrs Saira emphasised that she has taken this decision out of pain and agony. Mrs Saira requests privacy and understanding from the public during this challenging time, as she navigates this difficult chapter in her life”, it added. Saira has largely remained out of the public eye. AR Rahman did not actively post photos with his spouse on social media and she rarely accompanied him to public events.
