Big Buzz/ Black Panther star Lupita Nyong'o announces split with Selema Masekela who she can 'no longer trust'

On Thursday, Nope actress Lupita Nyong’o announced her decision to split with her boyfriend, TV host and musician Selema Masekela. The actress took to her Instagram page to share the news. The Nope actress posted a detailed note in which she informed her followers about the breakup and also requested her fans to not spread hatred.

'I am choosing to face the pain'

Nyong’o began her note by addressing the tense political climate, stating, “There are much more important things going on in the world right now, and my thoughts are with those who are deeply suffering” before explaining why is it important for her to “share a certain personal truth about her life and publicly dissociate herself from someone” she can no longer trust. 

Nyong’o further wrote in her note, “I am tempted to run into the shadows and hide, only to return to the light when I have regained my strength enough for me to say, “Whatever, my life is better this way.” But I am reminded that the magnitude of the pain I am feeling is equal to the measure of my capacity for love.” The actress further noted that she is “choosing to face the pain, cultivating the courage to meet life exactly as it is, and trusting that this too shall pass.”

The Black Panther: Wakanda Forever actor also shared in her note the biggest reason behind announcing her breakup as she hoped that the knowledge of her experience might be useful to someone else out there experiencing the grip of heartbreak who is poised to try and escape from the pain and miss out on the wisdom that comes from it. 

Nyong'o made it official with Masekela last year

Nyong’o’s Insta post announcing her breakup comes a day after she was seen attending Janelle Monae's concert with friends and Dawson’s Creek actor Joshua Jackson, 45. 

Nyong’o made her relationship with Masekela official in December 2022, when she posted a reel of them taking an Instagram challenge together. Two months ago, the Nope actress posted a loving note to wish Masekela on her birthday. As of now, Masekela has not officially commented or responded to Nyong’o latest Instagram post about their breakup.

On the work front, Nyong’o had last featured in the 2022 movie Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Recently, the actress also gave a voice-over for one of the characters in the animated series Big Mouth.
