Michael Jackson’s leather jacket fetches whopping price at London auction
Following his unprecedented success with the Thriller album, Michael Jackson donned this leather jacket to film a Pepsi commercial in 1984.
Michael Jackson’s leather jacket, which he wore for a Pepsi commercial, recently sold for £250,000 ($306,000) at a London auction. Following his unprecedented success with the Thriller album, the pop star donned this jacket to film a Pepsi commercial in 1984. The commercial gained notoriety due to an incident wherein Jackson sustained severe burns while filming and his hair caught fire.
Michael Jackson’s Leather Jacket auction
Although most people cannot afford a jacket costing more than $300,000, the final cost was less than anticipated. Originally, a far higher amount—up to $488,000—had been quoted. Even though no one placed a bid even close to that amount, it was still the event's biggest success.
The jacket was up for auction as part of a larger collection of items connected to other music icons, conducted by auctioneers Propstore. Memorabilia from other superstars, including George Michael, David Bowie, AC/DC, Amy Winehouse, and Elvis Presley, was on display at the event.
Other Michael Jackson items sold in auctions
Jackson memorabilia has previously brought thousands of dollars at auction. His iconic moonwalk dance, which he performed for the first time in 1983 while wearing a black fedora hat, brought €77,640 (£67,088) at a Paris auction in September.
An auction previously brought in $190,000 for a crystal-studded glove worn by the King of Pop during the Jacksons' 1984 Victory tour. Kim Kardashian reportedly spent over $65,000 in 2019 on a jacket featured in Michael Jackson's Thriller video, which she gave to her daughter North for Christmas.
