Brooke Shields, a fellow Hollywood actress, once gave Tom Cruise an earful over his remarks against taking anti-depressants.
Hollywood action star Tom Cruise is among the highest-paid actors in the world. He has primarily acted in action and science fiction movies. It is well known that he frequently pulls off dangerous stunts for his action movies on his own.
The actor is also well-known for supporting the Church of Scientology. His membership in Scientology has occasionally gotten him into problems as well. Brooke Shields, a fellow Hollywood actress, once gave him an earful over his remarks against anti-depressants.
Tom Cruise expresses his disapproval of anti-depressants
Talking about the use of anti-depressants, Cruise said in a 2005 interview with Access Hollywood, “When someone says (medication) has helped them, it is to cope, it didn’t cure anything. There is no science. There is nothing that can cure them whatsoever,” he said. The actor advised women to take "vitamins and exercise" to take care of themselves to deal with postpartum depression.
Brooke Shields fires back
The remarks made by Cruise did not sit well with Shields. The actress responded with an opinion piece of her own in the New York Times, writing, “Tom should stick to saving the world from aliens and let women who are experiencing postpartum depression decide what treatment options are best for them.”
The two stars have previously worked together in the 1981 film Endless Love. Following medical advice that he was misinformed, Cruise eventually apologized to Shields in public the following year, and she publicly accepted his apology.
The actress’ wish came true as postpartum depression became a topic of conversation for more people. Later, Cruise even took part in promoting new laws to support the growth of postpartum care and research. As a sign that she and the Mission Impossible star had made amends, Brooke attended his wedding with Katie Holmes in 2006.
