Bend It Like Beckham 2 in the works? Director reveals what changed her mind about making sequel

The 2002 indie film Bend It Like Beckham was a huge hit in both the US and the UK. The majority of the reviews were positive and with a $5.6 million budget, it was able to earn roughly $76.5 million worldwide. Now, it seems like the film might be getting a sequel, as hinted by the director Gurinder Chadha.

Gurinder Chadha teases Bend It Like Beckham 2

In a conversation with Metro UK, Gurinder talked about the possibility of making the sequel to Bend It Like Beckham. The filmmaker said, “I never really wanted to make a sequel to the film, because I just thought the way Parminder and Keira played it, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Archie Panjabi, I could never really follow that up and create that same magic in the same way, but with the recent success of football, I just feel like I’m starting to percolate an idea for a possible sequel of some kind.”

Women's soccer has developed into a genuine phenomenon in recent years, particularly in the United States, North America and even Europe, drawing enthusiastic and greater audiences to its matches and with new clubs appearing every year. 

What is Bend It Like Beckham about? 

The main character of Bend It Like Beckham is Jess (Parminder Nagra), a British Indian teenager with a deep love for football and renowned footballer David Beckham. Jess loves and is committed to the sport, but her parents, who have much more traditional ideas, would prefer that she concentrate on her studies and eventually find a nice man to marry.

But when Jess accepts Jules' (Keira Knightley) invitation to play for the neighborhood women's football team, their fantasies come true. The movie has received praise for its examination of gender and cultural standards over the years, offering an enlightening perspective through Jess while breaking down barriers in the process.
