Golden Globe Awards adds new categories for stand-up comedian, box office achievement

The Golden Globes have historically supported all categories of talent throughout the history of cinema. However, ever since the advent of streaming and the high reach of mass entertainment, the parameters for nominations and wins have become somewhat confusing. To bridge the gap, the Golden Globes committee has added two new categories that will feature in the 2024 edition.

• The first Golden Globe Awards ceremony was held in 1944. 
• The Golden Globes mark a high point for the awards season which ends with the Academy Awards.

New Golden Globe categories introduced

The new categories were announced on the official X (formerly known as Twitter) handle for the Golden Globe Awards. While one post read, “New #GoldenGlobes category alert. Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television!,” the other post read, “The #GoldenGlobes introduces Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.” Moreover, a video announcing the categories was also included in the posts. Golden Globes president on new categories 

As per Variety, the president of the Golden Globes, Helen Hoehne, spoke about why the new categories are being included. The statement read, “The Golden Globes has a rich history of supporting and celebrating the work of comedians, and we’re thrilled to honour their brilliance alongside outstanding motion picture and television performances of the year.”

She added that the team behind Golden Globes is proud to be recognising the effort and innovation that is placed behind films that can be deemed as, “both a blockbuster and artistically exceptional.” 

Notably, the new categories have come into effect and will be part of the upcoming telecast of The Golden Globes. The 81st edition of the Golden Globe Awards will premiere on Sunday, January 7, 2024.
