Barbie: Meryl Streep says Margot Robbie starrer saved the film industry and 'all of our jobs’

During her recent appearance at the Palm Springs Film Awards, Meryl Streep showered praise on Greta Gerwig's film Barbie. The acclaimed actor and director, who collaborated on the 2019 film Little Women commended the satirical comedy for becoming the highest-grossing film of 2023 with a remarkable $1.4 billion in ticket sales.

Billie Eilish and Finneas made history by being the first songwriters to receive the Chairman’s Award for their contribution to the Barbie soundtrack with the song "What Was I Made For?" Meryl, taking the stage after their win, expressed her admiration, stating, "I just want to say to Billie and Finneas that you have delivered the Barbie love bomb. You’ve saved the movies last summer and all of our jobs. You’ve delivered joy to countless generations and genders of people. You should surf that wave, kids, until you’re old and deserve to be jaded like me.”

Barbie garnered nine Golden Globe nominations and 18 Critic’s Choice Award nominations. The soundtrack, featuring the award-winning song What Was I Made For? and hits like Dua Lipa's Dance The Night and Ryan's I'm Just Ken earned 12 Grammy nominations. The Barbie film's song is also shortlisted for the Best Original Song category at the Oscars.

No plans for Barbie sequel

Despite its massive success, there are no plans for a sequel to Barbie as the film was conceived as a standalone feature. However, there are currently 14 films in development based on Mattel toys, including projects centred around American Girl Doll, Barney, Christmas Balloon, Hot Wheels, Magic 8 Ball, Major Matt Mason, Masters of the Universe, Matchbox, Polly Pocket, Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots, Thomas The Tank Engine, Uno, View-Master, and Wishbone.
