Naomi Campbells on Gianni Versace's murder

The Super Models is a four-part series that takes viewers back to the heyday of supermodels, featuring Naomi Campbell alongside fellow legends Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, and Cindy Crawford. The series explores the rise of the supermodel phenomenon from the late '80s to the early 2000s.

In the fourth installment of the docuseries, the actress-supermodel recalled how her addiction struggles, including alcohol and drug abuse, were rooted in grief. Her dear friend and renowned designer, Gianni Versace, was tragically assassinated in 1997 by spree killer Andrew Cunanan outside his Miami Beach mansion.

Campbell vividly recalled receiving the devastating phone call about Versace's murder while she was on her way to meet his sister, Donatella, in Rome. She said that the news left her in a state of shock and disbelief.

The dark path of addiction

In the aftermath of Gianni Versace's death, from 1998 to 2005, Naomi Campbell turned to alcohol and drugs, particularly cocaine, as a way to cope with her overwhelming grief. She candidly described addiction as a misguided attempt to heal emotional wounds, emphasising that it ultimately fails in that regard.

Campbell's journey toward recovery began after collapsing during a photo shoot in 1999, leading her to check into rehab. She emphasised the importance of taking responsibility for her actions, acknowledging past mistakes, and making the important decision to seek help through rehabilitation.
