Oscars 2022 updates: 'CODA' bags Best Picture, Will Smith, Jessica Chastain win big

Oscars 2022: The 94th Academy Awards were held in Los Angeles on March 27. CODA won the Best Picture Award while Will Smith and Jessica Chastain won Best Actor and Best Actresses awards respectively. Meanwhile, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences reacted to the infamous slap gate incident involving Will Smith and Chris Rock saying that it does not support "violence of any form".

Encanto bagged the Best Animated Feature Film awards at the 94th annual Academy Awards 2022. Dune, on the other hand, grabbed as many as six Oscars from a total of 11 announced on Sunday evening for splendid performances in categories such as editing, score, production, design, cinematography and visual effects. Troy Kotsur bagged an Academy Award for his gripping performance as a fisherman named Frank Rossi in CODA. He is the second person with hearing impairment to get the award after 35 years Marlee Maitlin won the first one. 

Another remarkable moment was when Ariana DeBose bagged 'Best Supporting Actress' for her role as Anita in the movie West Side Story. She became the first openly queer actress to be nominated and receive the prestigious award for acting.

Hollywood observes moment of silence in support of Ukraine

As the Russian armed forces rage war in Ukraine's several embattled cities, the 94th Academy Awards observed a moment of silence for Ukrainians, while several celebrities have come forward and voiced their support for the war-stricken nation. 

Many of the attendees at the Oscars 2022 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood came dressed up in the colours of the Ukrainian flag to show their support for Ukraine and its people facing the Russian aggression dubbed by Vladimir Putin as a "special military operation".

Will Smith apologises to the Academy after punching comedian Chris Rock

In between the award ceremony, Will Smith lost his cool and slapped Chris Rock after the latter joked about Jada Pinkett Smith playing the titular role in GI Jane 2 addressing her baldness, which is due to a condition called alopecia. While the feud became the highlight of the ceremony, Smith apologised to the Academy for punching Rock moments before he won the Best Actor award for King Richard.

Ariana DeBose scripts history at Oscars 2022: Becomes first Afro-Latina queer person to bag the award in acting

Ariana DeBose won the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her portrayal of Anita in the musical romance West Side Story. DeBose made history as she became the first queer person of colour to win the award in acting. 

In her speech, the 31-year-old actor mentioned she found her strength in life through art. As per Entertainment Tonight, she said, "Imagine this little girl in the backseat of a white Ford Focus, you see a queer, openly queer woman of colour, an Afro-Latina, who found her strength in life through art." "And that's what I believe we're here to celebrate," she added.
