Will Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer re-release make it 3rd $1 billion grosser this year?

Oppenheimer broke several records at the box office during its long and glorious run at the cinema halls. The Christopher Nolan directorial opened right before the SAG-AFTRA strike came into effect, thus limiting its promotions. Despite hurdles, the film went on to earn close to USD 950 million at the global box office and even holds the title of the highest-grossing biopic ever.

 Now, the Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr starrer is all set to re-release in IMAX for a limited run.

Oppenheimer re-release comes during a quiet weekend

The blockbuster historical drama will be back on IMAX screens starting November 3. Among other screens, the biographical drama will run at the AMC CityWalk Stadium 19 in Hollywood, California, AMC Irvine Spectrum in Irvine, California, AMC Lincoln Square in New York City, AMC Metreon 16 in San Francisco, BFI London in the United Kingdom and Melbourne Museum in Australia. As per Variety, these premium screens were the first to sell out during the film’s initial box office run in August 2023.

Oppenheimer re-release comes at a quiet time for the box office, without any major releases on the calendar in the coming weekend. Disney’s The Marvels will claim most of the IMAX screens when it hits the theaters on November 10.

Will Oppenheimer enter USD 1 billion mark?

This year, only two movies have managed to cross the USD 1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. Barbie, which released alongside Oppenheimer, and The Super Mario Bros Movie were the only two titles that crossed the box office milestone this year. 

With USD 946 million under its belt, the re-release of Oppenheimer could push it into the billion-dollar club. But whether it will happen or not, only time will tell.
