Kaathal The Core box office day 1: Mammooty starrer is his 2nd lowest opener in 2023

Kaathal - The Core, the Malayalam film starring Mammootty and Jyothika that released on Thursday, November 23 took a low opening at the box office. The film collected 1.05 crore nett at the domestic ticket counters.

Kaathal - The Core is directed by Jeo Baby who had directed the much-acclaimed 2021 film The Great Indian Kitchen. The film is reportedly made on a modest budget of ₹10 crore. So if the film registers growth on Saturday, it is likely that the makers will recover their investment from theatrical revenues alone. 

Mammootty's last release was a superhit

This is Mammootty’s 5th theatrical release this year. His previous film, the thriller-drama Kannur Squad had enjoyed great success at the box office. Directed by Roby Varghese, Kannur Squad had earned over ₹82 crore worldwide, and was officially declared a superhit. 

Mammootty’s other two releases earlier this year - Agent and Christopher - marked an opening figure of ₹5.9 crore and ₹1.55 crore respectively. However, it must be noted that all the other Mammootty films these years were action-driven and relatively closer to commercial formula, as opposed to Kaathal - The Core which is far more unconventional and experimental in its storytelling. 

Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam, Mammootty's first release this year, earned ₹0.93 crore on day 1.

Kaathal The Core deals with homosexuality

Kaathal: The Core has also received great reviews for its subject and for Mammootty who chose to headline a script centered around a homosexuality. The film tells the story of a married couple who suddenly face an unprecedented turbulent situation in their life after the husband figure (played by Mammootty) is chosen to contest in the local by-elections.

Kaathal - The Core is produced by Mammootty Kompany, the production banner owned by Mammootty himself. The script is penned by Paulson Skaria and Adarsh Sukumaran.
