Top Rumour/ Leo: Despite ₹460 crore collection, Vijay's film 'not profitable' for Tamil Nadu theatre owners?
Loo has collected over ₹460 crore at the worldwide box office in eight days but the theatre owners have not been able to make the profit they'd hoped for.
Leo has turned out to be one of the biggest hits from Tamil cinema. The Thalapathy Vijay starrer has reportedly grossed ₹460 crore plus at the worldwide box office in just a week of its release. However, according to social media buzz, the numbers being reported by Lalit Kumar of Seven Screen Studios, the distributors of Leo, are fake. On X (formerly Twitter), the hashtag 'Leo Scam' has also been trending. This viral hashtag could also be a result of the ongoing fan war between Vijay and Rajinikanth fans.
Meanwhile, film distributor Tirupur Subramaniam has claimed that Leo has not turned out to be a profitable film for the distributors in Tamil Nadu because Seven Screen Studio demanded an unprecedented 80 percent share of the film's revenue from the theatre owners. In response, theatre owners across Chennai initially protested, refusing to screen the movie. Only after negotiations were they persuaded to showcase Leo, ultimately bringing it to more than 850 screens throughout Tamil Nadu.
Theatre Owners Association President opens up about Leo
In a recent statement, Tirupur Subramaniam, the President of the Theatre Owners Association, expressed the industry's financial struggles in relation to Leo. He emphasised that the film failed to generate profits for theatre owners due to the substantial revenue share demanded. “Leo was not a profitable film for us,” Subramaniam said.
"The reason is that they have bought share distribution, which is unprecedented in Tamil Nadu. Most theatre owners did not screen this film willingly," he continued.
Leo box office collection
After releasing on October 19, Leo has managed to earn over ₹460 crore at the worldwide box office. After a record-breaking week one collection, the movie's business witnessed a dip in its collection. According to Sacnilk, the film raked in ₹265.83 crore net in India in eight days. On its eighth day in theatres, the film collected ₹10.25 crore in all languages.
Lokesh Kanagaraj's film had an overall 25.92% occupancy for the Tamil version on October 26. Leo's worldwide collection stands at ₹464.3 crore. The movie has done good business in the UK and US as well, which has driven its overall business.
