For the people of Tamil Nadu, a Thalapathy Vijay movie release is not merely an event; it's a festival.
In the realm of Tamil cinema, Thalapathy Vijay isn't just a superstar; he's a deity, and the release of his latest film, Leo, has set the entire state of Tamil Nadu ablaze with anticipation, celebrations, and an unmatched display of fan devotion.
Directed by the acclaimed Lokesh Kanagaraj and boasting a star-studded cast featuring Trisha Krishnan, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Mysskin, Mansoor Ali Khan, and Mathew Thomas, Leo arrived on screens today, October 19, amid a whirlwind of both fanfare and controversies. Anirudh's musical compositions add to the cinematic allure of this much-anticipated film.
For the people of Tamil Nadu, a Thalapathy Vijay movie release is not merely an event; it's a festival. The release date of October 19 marked a highly awaited day for Thalapathy's legion of fans, who consider his film launches a cultural celebration. However, this time, the day was not without its share of speculations, political entry rumours, court cases surrounding special shows, and distribution conflicts.
No 4 am or 7 am shows for Leo
Traditionally, the Tamil Nadu Government permits theatres to hold a special fan show, known as FDFS (First Day First Show), at 4 am on the release day. However, due to safety concerns following a tragic incident during a previous film release, the government has been keen on restricting these early-morning fan shows. Despite fans' deep disappointment over the government's denial of the 4 am or 7 am FDFS, the film eventually hit screens at 9 am.
The renowned theatres in Chennai, such as Rohini Silver Screens, Kasi Talkies, Udhayam Cinemas, Vetri Cinemas, Devi Cinemas, Sangam Cinemas, and Rakki Cinemas, spared no effort in orchestrating grand celebrations for Thalapathy Vijay's fans. Giant banners, fan club displays, and towering cutouts of the superstar adorned the theatres.
Fans dance exuberantly outside theatres
Despite the challenges, Leo shattered pre-sales records in the Tamil film industry, and the theatres were brimming with fans even before the crack of dawn on release day. The atmosphere was electric, with continuous bursts of fireworks, loud music featuring Vijay's chart-topping hits, and fans dancing exuberantly both inside and outside the theatres.
One notable ritual was fans climbing the towering cutouts of Thalapathy Vijay with milk packets to perform 'abhisegam,' a symbolic act of worship akin to rituals in Hindu temples. The diverse age range of attendees, spanning from 5-year-olds to those in their 70s, showcased that the excitement transcends generations.
In interviews with fans, the love for Thalapathy Vijay was evident. One fan, a self-proclaimed '90s kid,' emphasised the actor's influence on his life, not just on-screen but also for his philanthropic endeavours. Another fan, Mangai, a 48-year-old woman, described Vijay as every woman's crush, a brotherly figure, and an irreplaceable favourite.
To ensure the safety of the jubilant crowds, the Tamil Nadu police deployed over 100 officials at every cinema screen across the state, underscoring the significance of security measures in the wake of past incidents. The stringent security measures extend to both multiplexes and single-screen theatres, a testament to the commitment to a seamless and secure cinematic experience for Thalapathy Vijay's legion of fans.
Leo has not only captivated the silver screen but has ignited a cinematic phenomenon that resonates far beyond the boundaries of traditional film releases, solidifying Thalapathy Vijay's status as the reigning king of Tamil cinema.
