The term "Cortisol face" has recently surged in popularity, where it is used to describe a puffy or rounded facial appearance allegedly caused by high levels of the stress hormone cortisol. However, this term is more nuanced than social media influencers might suggest.

What is cortisol?

Cortisol is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands, located above the kidneys. While it's commonly known as the "stress hormone," its role extends beyond stress response. Cortisol helps regulate blood pressure, blood sugar levels, metabolism, and inflammation. It is crucial for various bodily functions, not just stress management.

The phenomenon referred to as Cortisol face involves facial puffiness or rounding, which some attribute to elevated cortisol levels. However, attributing these changes solely to cortisol is an oversimplification. Factors such as inadequate sleep, poor diet, excessive alcohol consumption, and genetic predisposition also play significant roles in facial puffiness.

What occurs as a result of high cortisol?

A rare condition known as Cushing’s Syndrome, caused by an overproduction of cortisol from a pituitary or adrenal gland tumour or prolonged use of steroid medications, can lead to more pronounced changes in facial appearance. This condition usually develops over a long period and affects multiple body systems, not just facial features.

Social media claims suggesting quick fixes for Cortisol face, such as specific products or remedies, are often misleading. Addressing facial puffiness generally requires a holistic approach, including lifestyle adjustments like improving sleep quality, maintaining a balanced diet, and managing alcohol intake.

While the term "Cortisol face" trends on social media platforms, it’s important to approach such claims with caution. Understanding the broader context of cortisol's role and addressing various contributing factors is essential for managing facial changes effectively.
