Prayagraj: The United Engineering College in Prayagraj had suspended its first-year student Lareb Hashmi who had brutally attacked a bus conductor on a moving bus using a chopper, in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj on Friday. The college officials on Tuesday revealed his traits.

Talking about Hashmi, college Principal HP Shukla said that they had suspended Hashmi after they got to know about the incident.

He said, “We were also shocked and sad about the incident. After we got to know about the incident, we discussed his attitude, performance with the faculty. Our teachers said that he was a backbencher. He used to remain quiet in class. He got enrolled in this institute around one-and-a-half-month ago. We immediately suspended him from the college. We have also set up a committee to investigate the matter and give suggestions about what has to be done with him in the future.”

Whereas his teacher, Pradeep Kumar, who teaches Mathematics, told that he was an average student.

“There are around 60 students in his class. He was as normal as other students. He is an average student. He scored good in the Mathematics test,” the teacher said.

College Dean, Sudhanshu, said that no such incident had taken place in the college till date.

The dean said, “I have been teaching here for over 20 years. It was an unfortunate incident. No such incident had taken place in the institute before. Till date, Lareb had behaved normally in college.”

While speaking to Republic TV, his classmates revealed that Lareb was a quiet and an average student. He had not fought with anyone in the college, they said.

A classmate said, “He used to sit at the back benches. We never saw him fighting with anyone here. We were surprised to know what he had done as he was a quiet person.”

Another classmate said, ”There was nothing abnormal about his behaviour.”

The accused student is a first-year student of United Engineering College in the city.

According to locals, the accused student and the bus conductor had a dispute over bus ticket price and when the latter scolded Hashmi, it made him upset. The accused boarded the bus two days after the incident and attacked the victim using a sharp-edged weapon. Hashmi had allegedly chanted slogans while committing the heinous crime. The accused student had later confessed to the crime in a purported video that had come to light.
