Bhopal: In a shocking incident, an unidentified man placed shoes on the statue of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri near the Police Commissioner’s office in Bhopal on Saturday. This act of disrespect led to anger among locals and political groups, who quickly gathered at the site to demand justice.

After learning about the incident, Congress workers arrived at the scene, cleaned the statue with milk as a mark of respect, and raised slogans, vowing not to tolerate any insult to the former leader. They also questioned the security in the area, pointing out that if such an act could occur near the police headquarters, safety in the city was a serious concern.

The police responded by launching an investigation. Arera Hills Police Station in-charge Manoj Patwa said officers were checking CCTV footage from the area to identify those involved. He promised that the culprits would be caught soon.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Arun Yadav condemned the act and urged the state government to take strict action. He called it “insulting” and asked for immediate steps to hold those responsible accountable.

Lal Bahadur Shastri, known for his simplicity and honesty, was India’s second Prime Minister and is remembered for his slogan “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan.” The statue, located near a well-known auditorium in the city, honors his legacy. The defacement upset many, sparking public demands for increased security at monuments across Bhopal.

A man was detained for allegedly vandalising a statue of former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri in Madhya Pradesh capital Bhopal on Saturday, a police official confirmed.

The statue is situated close to Kushabhau Thakre auditorium, Arera Hill police station inspector Manoj Patwa said.

"On the complaint of Jahangirabad Congress block committee president Yashwant Yadav we registered a case under section 298 (defilement of sacred object) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). 

A 35-year-old man has been detained. He has told us he was intoxicated when he committed the act," Patwa said.
